Chapter 14

Ansel

Nora’s smile was dazzling. Ansel had to rip his eyes from her lips to pay attention to where he was going. Of course, he had been to the port, many times in fact, but it had been years and things had changed.

The port had obviously become wealthier if the large gas-eating boats were any indication.

He had brought along some silver and gold from his recent exploits. They would be able to live quite well during their stay, nothing like the old days scraping every bit of change to get by.

Despite himself, he looked forward to showing Miss St. Clair some of this world.

Ansel continued walking smoothly down the dock in spite of his mental knee jerk reaction wanting to twist his arm free from the lady in question and run away. What was he even thinking? He didn’t need any baggage, he had enough. He could not condone this interest.

But they would be together here in Tarpon Bay, wouldn’t they? Nora sent a questioning look at him and he curled his lips before clearing his mind and wondering how she would react to the car drive into town.

Then he heard the distant howl. Another howl answered closer. Ansel’s lips twitched. Per Nick’s recollection, there were several werewolves in this area. He wondered if they were partial to nymphs. Though Nick was his bosun, he didn’t have experience with werewolves in the wild.

Glancing behind him he located Belen and Shyle. Having a couple warrior nymphs tag along certainly made him more comfortable, although they wouldn’t always be around. They all had errands to run.

The little lady next to him knew nothing about this world. Or what resided in it. Humans, yes, but so much more. Even Ansel himself had been oblivious to the things that went bump in the night until he’d ended up in the Salt World.

As they neared the end of the dock, Ansel saw Orson come out of the marina’s office and hold up some papers. He passed one sheet to Ansel as they passed before the man made his way back to the boat to shore it up with Nick and file the needed documents to prove their payment and licensing were in order. Nick would stay with the ship and accept the deliveries that Belen and Shyle would arrange to be brought over.

Ansel steered them over to the parking lot and that was when Nora noticed the cars.

“Oh, what are these?” she exclaimed as she briefly tightened her grip on his arm. She gave no indication of noticing the looks, or more specifically the people pointing at them as though they were role playing or maybe even famous.

“They are called cars or in some cases, those longer ones with a storage area in the back are called trucks. That’s how the people get around here.”

As though he had summoned it, a blue four-door truck pulled into the lot and slowly went past them hauling a medium sized race boat covered in stickers and stripes.

“Oh, he must be quite important.
